Proper Coccidiosis Disinfection

Ciarán Lenehan talks through what a successful disinfection for coccidiosis looks like.

Drenches like Chanox and Dycoxan are one part of the coccidiosis control puzzle, reducing environmental burden through good management is another.

Some key points:

  • Dryness is hugely important. The shed needs to dry fully between every step and then be left dry, clean and idle for as long as possible prior to the next season. That is why it is a summer job for spring-calving farms.
  • Most commercially available disinfectants are not effective against coccidia oocysts. Look for amine- or ammonia-based products, or those containing chlorocresol. If in doubt, ask your vet, merchant or advisor.
