Housing Parasite Protocols for Beef & Drystock Farms

Housing Parasite Protocols for Beef & Drystock Farms

Housing represents a good point in the season to treat cattle for parasites like liver fluke and worms. Our team are constantly asked for treatment protocols to give animals the best 'clean out' from parasites at housing time. However, there is no one-size fits all. Below we have outlined housing parasite treatment plans for eight different farm types and scenarios.

These plans are designed to eradicate stomach worms & gut worms, lungworm, liver fluke, lice and mange mites.

High liver fluke risk farms

Tribex 10% and Animec Pour-On

Use pour-on at housing. Delay Tribex 10% dose for 10-14 days post-housing.

Medium liver fluke risk farms

Albex 10%, synthetic pyrethroid product and Rumenil

Use Albex at housing. Administer Rumenil dose 10 weeks post-housing. Synthetic pyrethroid active ingredient e.g. deltamethrin, permethrin, cypermethrin.

Low liver fluke risk farm that has used clear wormers during grazing

Albex 10%, synthetic pyrethroid and faecal egg count

Use Albex at housing. Carry out pooled FEC 10 weeks post-housing to detect remaining liver fluke. Synthetic pyrethroid active ingredient e.g. deltamethrin, permethrin, cypermethrin.

High liver fluke risk farms

Doramax Pour-On and Tribex 10%

Doramax worm dose can be given up to five weeks pre-housing with no further worm or lice/mite treatment required at housing time. Delay Tribex 10% dose for 10-14 days post-housing.

Low liver fluke risk farm that has used white/yellow wormers during grazing

Doramax Pour-On and faecal egg count

Doramax worm dose can be given up to five weeks pre-housing with no further worm or lice/mite treatment required at housing time. Carry out pooled FEC 10 weeks post-housing to detect remaining liver fluke.

High liver fluke risk farm that has used clear wormers during grazing

Tribex 10%, synthetic pyrethroid and Zerofen 10%

Use Zerofen at housing. Delay Tribex 10% dose for 10-14 days post-housing. Synthetic pyrethroid active ingredient e.g. deltamethrin, permethrin, cypermethrin.

Medium liver fluke risk farms

Animec Super and faecal egg count

Worm & fluke injection at housing. May require a follow up synthetic pyrethroid treatment. Carry out pooled FEC 10 weeks post-housing to detect remaining liver fluke.

Medium liver fluke risk farms

Animec Super and Rumenil

Injection at housing. May require a follow up synthetic pyrethroid treatment. Administer Rumenil dose 10 weeks post-housing.
